Astronomy Olympiad is one of the presitigious International events, organised every year. Indian teams have been giving splendid performance consistently at the International Astronomy Olympiads. At the XII IAO, Crimea, the 6 member team received 3 Gold Medals, 2 Silver Medals and 1 Bronze Medal,in addition to the special prize for Best Performance in the Observational Round (Senior). The detailed result is as follows:

Outline of the Olympiad Selection Procedure In India :

The selection for the Astronomy Olympiad is a four stage process. It starts by enrollment for the selection typically between 15th August to 15th September of every year. The enrollment is done with IAPT ( Indian Association of Physics Teachers) through schools.

Eligibility Criteria : Students studying in 8th and 9th Classes (Age = 13 to 14 years) qualify for Junior Group whereas students in 10th and 11th Class (Age = 15 & 16 years) qualify for the Senior Group.

Stage I :  This stage consists of screening test conducted by IAPT as NSEA (National Standards Examination in Astronomy). This takes place on the Last Sunday of every year.

Stage II : Known as INAO ( Indian National Astronomy Olympiad) is conducted by HBCSE ( Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education) and NCSM (National Council of Science Musiums). This screening test is conducted on the Second Sunday of February. Nearly 300 junior and senior students are selected for this test after screening from Stage I.

Stage III : This is Indian National Astronomy Training and involve rigorous training and selection procedure. For this stage nearly 40-50 students are selcted from stage II. Stage III is a residential camp conducted at Nehru Science Centre, Mumbai. This camp involves classroom training, problem solving excercises, Tutorials in Astronomy, Observational astronomy and expository lectures of various scientists. In this process 5 tests are conducted of which 2 are for problem solving, 2 for Lab data analysis and one on observational astronomy.

Stage IV : This is the actual competition.


 International Olympiad - 2007:

Indian teams have given a splendid performance at the International Astronomy Olympiads recently held at Semeiz, Crimea in Ukraine. Six member Indian team received 3 Gold Medals, 2 Silver Medals and 1 Bronze Medal, in addition to the special prize for Best Performance in the Observational Round (Senior). The detailed results are as follows:

Junior Group:     1. Aniruddha Bapat (Pune)   - Gold Medal,     2. Himalay Senapati (Bhadrak)  - Silver Medal and     3. Amit Warrier (Banglore)   - Bronze Medal

Senior Group:     1. Uttam Bhat (Manipal)   - Silver Medal,     2. Tushar Shrotriya (Pune)   - Gold Medal and      3. Kedar Tatwawadi (Nashik)  - Gold Medal + special prize

Indian team was led by Mr. Kedar Soni, Abhinav Vidyalaya, Dombivali and Mr. Mahesh Shetti, Wilson College, Mumbai. Mr. Anand Ghaisas, HBCSE, Mumbai  accompanied the team as Scientific Observer.
